One of Phil Lobel’s (A&S ex’79) favorite stories, stretching back to his early days as a Hollywood publicist, took place in a sushi restaurant on Sunset Boulevard in 1987.

As he chatted with a prospective client, a young unknown actor from the Midwest — Sean Penn and Madonna strode casually by and sat down at a nearby table — followed by a cluster of autograph seekers.

After observing the scene for several moments, the struggling actor turned to Lobel.

“Someday, do you think people will come up to me for my autograph?’’ asked Brad Pitt, who at the time was sharing an apartment with five roommates, sleeping on a mattress on the floor and eating at Taco Bell.

The answer became obvious a few months later when Pitt started to pop up on the cover of top teen magazines. Lobel managed Pitt’s TV and nascent film career prior to his movie debut in Thelma and Louise.

“Back then, Brad had no idea about anything,” Lobel says. “He’d just gotten off the boat from Springfield, Mo.’’

Sitting on the patio of his Hollywood bungalow on a midweek afternoon, Lobel chuckles at the memory of that day, one of many storybook moments in a career in which he’s come to anticipate the unexpected. He’s spent more than 25 years at the helm of the Los Angeles-based Lobeline Communications, which offers public relations, media relations, marketing communications, corporate branding and reputation management for entertainment, music-related, corporate and nonprofit clients

Yet Lobel hasn’t survived nearly three decades in Hollywood by accident. It was through a series of strategic moves. He helped Steel Pulse climb the pop charts, Aaron Carter become a pop star, Anthony Robbins graduate from infomercials and magician David Copperfield find happiness in the mainstream press.

Symphony tCGM System

Transdermal medical device specialist Echo Therapeutics has developed a deep expertise in advanced skin permeation technology. The company has developed the Symphony® tCGM System as a non-invasive, wireless, transdermal continuous glucose monitoring (tCGM) system and the Prelude® SkinPrep System for transdermal drug delivery. It has just announced that it is initiating clinical studies of its system in critical care patients. The company expects to complete and announce the results of the studies in the near term.

Echo Therapeutics is developing the Symphony tCGM System as a non-invasive, wireless, transdermal continuous glucose monitoring system for patients with diabetes and for use in hospital critical care units.

Echo is also developing its needle-free Prelude SkinPrep System as a platform technology for enhanced skin permeation for delivery of topical pharmaceuticals.

The two component glucose monitoring system incorporates skin prep using the Prelude device to remove the outer skin layer in an atraumatic fashion, following which the Symphony Monitor is brought into contact with the lightly dermabraded skin. The device monitors for up to 24 hours, although a 48 hour version is apparently in the pipeline.

BREAKING NEWS: Wrongfully Convicted American Citizen Jason Puracal Sentenced to 22 Years in Prison by Nicaraguan Political Agent

Managua, Nicaragua - American citizen Jason Puracal was sentenced to 22 years in a maximum security prison by “a Nicaraguan political agent of the Socialist Sandinista Party that is neither a judge nor licensed attorney,” says U.S. Attorney Anna Tolin of Tolin Law Firm.

Tolin added, “Despite all evidence to the contrary, this former Peace Corps volunteer was convicted on false charges of drug trafficking, money laundering, and organized crime. The trial process was replete with violations of Nicaraguan law and failed to meet even minimum standards of due process and fairness.”

Nicaraguan press confirmed the man appointed to preside over Puracal’s trial, 29-year-old Kriguer Alberto Artola Narvaez, does not meet the requirements to serve as a judge and is not a licensed attorney. “He was, instead, assigned to the bench by the Sandinista government in violation of Nicaraguan law,” says Tolin.

After he failed to show up for the scheduled sentencing hearing, Artola Narvaez issued the sentence in absentia, never calling the defendants or legal team back into the courtroom to face them.

The defense will file an immediate appeal in the Appeals Tribunal of Granada.
